She wasn’t drop dead gorgeous, nor was she ugly. She was pretty and attractive. Just pretty and attractive. The tall girl had light brown hair with streaks of blonde. She was white, not the pale white, but the white that left her cheeks red. The tall girl walked to where they were standing. She gave the tall girl a questioning look as she came closer. ‘What was happening? Who is that girl?’ she thought. He looked at the girl and smiled. She knew all his cousins and family, but that girl looked nothing like them. She looked foreign.
“Hey,” the tall girl said.
“Hey Sarah,” he replied back.
She stood silently observing them.
“Good morning,” Sarah said as she pecked his cheek, “we’re all waiting for you inside.”
Her heart stopped. She felt hot liquid rise up her throat. Her stomach flipped and she was about to cry. ‘How could he?’ she thought. She wanted to slap the girl for kissing him. But what killed her the most wasn’t the kiss; it was the fact that he didn’t do anything. He didn’t push her off nor did he tell her to stop. She breathed out, “I, I need to go now.” She looked at him disgustingly and took steps back towards her car. She tried to keep her voice calm, but the anger and pain took over.
“La, la don’t go.” He followed her.
Sarah stood watching them with a lost look. She didn’t know what was going on, and she couldn’t understand most of the language.
She pushed him away and got into her car and started the engine. He banged on the window, “Please, khanafhmch.. Latro7een,”
“Etfahmney shno?” She yelled. “Bas khalas mabe afham shay. A9lan ana madre laish thaya3t wakty oo yait. You obviously moved on, wana elghabeya ely 3abaly you didn’t.” She put her car in reverse and drove off crying miserably.
He stood with a blank look and stared angrily at Sarah who was fiddling with her phone.
“Did you have to do that?” He yelled.
“What? I’m sorry I’m still learning.” Sarah protested.
Where Sarah came from, it was more than okay to kiss a brother in law, but where he came from it wasn’t.
“I’m sorry if I interrupted anything?” Sarah apologized.
“Well I hoped there would be a thing, but thanks to you, there won’t be anything.” He ran back inside. A year away from her was enough for him; he didn’t want to lose her again.
He looked frantically around his room for his phone and key that he didn’t hear the knock on his door.
“Faisal?” His brother called.
“Ha? Shino?” Faisal looked alarmed.
“Eshga3d etsawe? Yala tara eb yabde el film?”
Since their childhood, Faisal, Khalid and their baby sister Haya would have a movie marathon with their cousins and family each Friday. Now that they’re older, there’s a new addition to their gathering, which was Sarah. The three siblings decided to never miss out on a Friday gathering since both Faisal and Khalid study abroad.
“Adwer mefta7y,” Faisal replied shortly, and then he remembered that the reason he was in this dilemma was because of his brother’s wife. “Oo raja2an goul 7ag Sarah ena she can’t keep kissing us anymore!” Faisal snapped.
Khalid had a confused look; he wasn’t the conservative type and knew that his wife was loyal to him.
“Khalas enshalla ba7acheeha, bas tabe mefta7 shino? Laish wayn betroo7?” Khalid asked.
Faisal found his keys on his dresser, grabbed his phone and walked out of his room totally ignoring Khalid’s last question. He dashed down the stairs and just as he was about to leave Haya bumped into him. Khalid, unaware of what was wrong with Faisal, went to the living room to have a word with his wife.
“Faisal wayen betroo7?” Haya asked.
“Hayoona 7abebty I’m sorry bas I’m going to miss ga3datna elyoum.” Faisal apologized to his seventeen-year-old sister.
“Laish Faisal? Eshfeek?” Haya frowned.
Even though there was a five-year gap between Faisal and Haya, their relationship was very close. Faisal breathed out and looked intently at Haya, thinking whether to tell her or not.
“Faisal what’s wrong?” Haya gripped Faisal’s arm and looked at him sternly.
“Dalal.” Faisal replied.
It took Haya ten seconds to remember who Dalal was and what she meant to Faisal. When Faisal and Dalal broke up, Haya stopped talking to Faisal for weeks because she knew they were meant for each other.
“Eshfeeha?” Haya tried to stay calm.
“Sheftha, tawa. Ehny kanat bara. Bas ra7at. Ra7at 3ani.” Faisal stuttered.
“What??” Haya shrieked, “Shloun? Laish yat?” Haya asked for more details but all Faisal could do was shrug and shake his head. He didn’t have any answers, but he was desperate for them. Faisal tried to free himself from Haya’s grip so that he could run to Dalal, but Haya held his arm tightly.
“La7tha, gabl latroo7. Goly shino betsawe al7een?” Haya asked.
“Madree! Stop asking me questions I don’t have answers to,” Faisal yelled. “Kel ely a3arfa ena I don’t want to lose her again.” And with those words, Faisal stormed out of his house and got into his car to accomplish his mission.
